A single-car crash in East Hampton last night resulted in the death of a local high school student and injuries to six others. CBS News New York reported that the accident occurred shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Old Stone Highway near Deep Six Drive, when an 18-year-old driver, Luis Gonzalo Barrioneuevo-Fuertes, lost control of a Toyota Camry, which went off the road, overturned, and struck a tree.
Barrioneuevo-Fuertes has been arrested and is facing multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a child. In the crashed vehicle, police discovered eight individuals, among them, a 15-year-old who Barrioneuevo-Fuertes is specially charged for putting at risk. One of the victims, 19-year-old Scarleth Urgiles of East Hampton, was pronounced dead at the scene, and 18-year-old Jennifer Amon-Barrers has been transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries, yet is reported to be stable, as detailed a report by CBS News New York.
Additional coverage by News 12 Long Island confirmed that Urgiles was a student at East Hampton High School. The other five passengers, aged 15 to 19, were transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, though their current conditions have not been released. The high school has stated it will provide support services to students affected by the incident.
