Early this morning, a fire engulfed a residence in Seattle's Wallingford neighborhood, leading to a dramatic rescue of an adult female occupant by firefighters. The Seattle Fire Department responded to 911 calls at 1:09 a.m. about a blaze at the 3800 block of Sunnyside Ave. N., as reported by the Seattle Fire Line. The first unit on the scene, Engine 9, encountered active flames at the front of the two-story home and downed electrical wires.
Despite dense smoke and obstructions within the home, firefighter crews from Ladder 9 located and rescued a woman found on the ground, near a backdoor, within a few feet from which they made entry to the burning home. The patient, in critical condition, was swiftly transferred to Harborview Medical Center. Following the rescue, the fire rapidly intensified, leading to a breach of the roof by flames at 1:39 a.m., heightening the risk of collapse of the structure.
The situation prompted officials to escalate the incident to a 2-alarm response, calling almost a hundred firefighters to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent properties. Crews were forced to assume a defensive posture, battling the fire from a safe distance after evacuating the home due to the precarious nature of the fire-engulfed building.
Despite a setback with a collapsing chimney and parts of the roof falling in at 1:54 a.m., firefighters relentlessly pushed on and achieved control of the fire by 2:04 a.m. The incident was eventually downgraded, allowing for some units to continue addressing remaining hot spots, as per Seattle Fire Line's account of the event. Fortunately, no additional injuries were reported, and an investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.
