Flint Township, Mich., became the focal point of a firearms seizure when routine policing yielded far from ordinary results last Saturday night. The Flint Township Police Department disclosed on their Facebook page that officers stopped a vehicle containing three guns with high-capacity magazines, one of which was flagged as stolen property.
The traffic stop led to more than the simple issuance of a ticket, as two teenagers were arrested at the scene, the guns found raising the stakes of an otherwise mundane task for law enforcement. Meanwhile, ABC12 reports the 18-year-old involved was taken and lodged at Genesee County Jail, and though police tried to lodge his 17-year-old counterpart at a juvenile center, the offense was deemed insufficiently grave to warrant detention, leading instead to his release to parental custody.
The seized weapons and the subsequent arrest underscores the Flint Township Police Department's ongoing commitment to "removing illegally possessed firearms from our streets and holding offenders accountable," despite the policy-driven limitation that led to the minor’s release from interim custody, as mentioned in their public Facebook post.
