Former Severna Park Elementary School teacher Matthew Schlegel was found not guilty on 18 counts of sexual assault on Tuesday, following a weekslong trial that put the school and the community under intense scrutiny. The verdict, however, was only partial as the jury remained gridlocked on three charges of 2nd degree assault, out of the 21 total charges Schlegel faced. "There are simple details that they can’t keep straight," Schlegel's defense argued regarding the inconsistencies in the testimonies, according to FOX Baltimore.
The five-week trial attracted attention due to the nature of the accusations: Schlegel was charged with the sexual abuse of eight third-grade students, his former pupils, between August 2022 and March 2024. As reported by CBS News Baltimore, after jurors informed the judge that they had reviewed evidence but doubted they could come to a consensus on the remaining charges, they were subjected to an Allen charge, a judicial tool employed to encourage a deadlocked jury to reach a decision.
Defense attorneys used the court to highlight what they saw as key flaws in the prosecution's case. They zeroed in on the absence of physical evidence and the credibility of the children's delayed disclosures. "Child abuse happens, I said that in the courtroom but it's important to trust but verify and that's the step that got missed here," defense attorney Patrick Seidel was quoted by FOX Baltimore, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation in such cases. The state prosecutors, on the other hand, questioned why multiple children would undergo the harrowing experience of a trial if their allegations were not genuine.
In the details of the testimony, emotional accounts from the young students came to light. "Yes, except for when he touches me," one girl replied to an investigator during a forensic interview aired during the trial, as captured by FOX Baltimore. Another remarked on feeling a sense of trust due to the teacher's authority. Parents of the girls left the courtroom visibly shaken after the partial verdict was announced. Schlegel's next legal step hinges on a bail review scheduled for today, potentially leading to his release pending new developments, as discussed by CBS News Baltimore.
