Fort Collins is once again showing its commitment to sustainable transportation with the upcoming 37th annual Summer Bike to Work Day. Slated for June 25, this day-long event is set to turn the city streets into a lively hub for cyclists. According to Fort Collins Government News, community members are encouraged to leave their cars at home and to freely explore the city on two wheels during Colorado's Bike Month.
The initiative aims not only to promote cycling as a mode of transport but also to foster community spirit and health. AnnMarie Kirkpatrick, City of Fort Collins Active Modes Specialist, told Fort Collins Government News, "Bike to Work Day is a chance for our community to come together and experience the fun and freedom of getting around by bike." Over 90 stations will be peppered across the city, offering free breakfast and bike support from 6:30-9:30 a.m. and again from 4-6 p.m. Each station will provide various amenities, including pastries, coffee, and even more hearty options to kick-start the day.
The event is also significant for its inclusivity, welcoming riders from all walks of life regardless of their cycling experience. Fort Collins boasts a nationally recognized bike-friendly culture, a point of pride leading to its Platinum Bicycle Friendly Community status by the League of American Bicyclists, one of only five U.S. communities to hold such an accolade. Participants can look forward to camaraderie along the extensive trail and bikeway system, sharing waves, high-fives, and conversations with fellow cyclists.
Alongside the festivities, safety and etiquette remain a priority. Those planning to attend are reminded to kindly follow all biking laws and courtesies. This includes yielding to pedestrians, signaling for turns, and observing the 15 mph trail courtesy speed limit. Additional stations will provide free bike checks and minor adjustments, offered by local bike mechanics, to ensure that participants can safely enjoy the event, explained Kirkpatrick. With an eye on the weather, cyclists are advised to come prepared for a day outdoors.
