A tornado swept through Fraser, Michigan, yesterday, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The National Weather Service confirmed the occurrence of the tornado amidst a series of severe storms across southern Michigan, noting extensive damage to homes and infrastructure in the area around 14 Mile Road and Garfield, as reported by WXYZ.

Although a tornado watch was in place for several counties in southwest Michigan, the Metro Detroit area, which includes Fraser, was not under a tornado watch when the warning was issued at 1:12 p.m. CBS Detroit NEXT Weather team noted that the occurrence was a rapid spin-up tornado, a type that can develop and move quickly, caught on video by residents, further confirmed by Chief Meteorologist Ahmad Bajjey, "Not uncommon, but unpleasant, and very, very fast," as per CBS News Detroit.

The rapid development of the tornado reflects a worrying pattern recognized by authorities this year. Michigan, which has an average of 13 tornadoes per year based on the past three decades, already had 25 by mid-May, and with yesterday's event, the count reached 29. The National Weather Service labeled it a historic year for the frequency of tornadoes in the state. The Great Lakes Water Authority issued a warning about potential flooding, particularly in Macomb County, where the ground was saturated due to earlier storms, reported The Detroit News.

Fraser residents shared harrowing experiences with WXYZ, including Cody Potyczka, who witnessed a carport being lifted into the air, prompting him to seek shelter. "A carport for a house went up in the air and it was flying through the air and I could see it and was like uh oh, time to go in the basement," recounted Potyczka. Amidst the recovery efforts, David Hall from Premier Roofing and Renovations described the urgency of repairs, stating, "We redecked it, tarped everything," highlighting the swift action to combat further rain expected overnight.
