This coming Monday, Genesee County enters another phase of infrastructure revamp as the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) sets to repair two critical bridges, signaling further steps towards enhancing local safety and mobility.
The maintenance focus will be on the westbound I-69 exit ramp bridge to Miller Road over Swartz Creek and the M-54 (Dort Highway) bridge over Thread Creek. The initiative is part of a $2.7 million investment that echoes Michigan's broad commitment to bolstering structural integrity for regional thoroughfares. The undertaking includes an array of fixes, from patching up concrete substructures to steel beam repair works, canvassing 13 structures across various counties.
"Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely," Governor Gretchen Whitmer stated in a tone imbued with resolve, as reported by the MDOT. Whitmer further highlighted the progress already made without a consequential burden on taxpayers, all done while supporting what she characterizes as numerous "good-paying, local jobs."
Starting Monday, motorists around Flint will need to adapt to some rerouting as the westbound I-69 ramp to Miller Road shuts down for repairs. A detour has been plotted via northbound I-75, eastbound Corunna Road and southbound Ballenger Road, to guide vehicles around the construction zones. The M-54 bridge, however, will still welcome traffic with center lane and single-lane closures managed daily to minimize disruptions.
MDOT predicts the direct and indirect support of 26 jobs thanks to the current investment, with a focus on safety and extending the service lives of these key bridges. The exact closure points and detour routes for future work sites will be disclosed in due time, ensuring residents can plan their travel accordingly. With an estimated end date of July 2 for this segment, and an overall project end date of October 2025, commuters and residents alike can look forward to more reliable infrastructure on the roads ahead.
