As the 2025 hurricane season begins, Harris County is providing support to residents. Commissioner Lesley Briones of Precinct 4 is leading efforts to help the community prepare. A free disaster preparedness workshop will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Tracy Gee Community Center on Westcenter Drive in Westchase. The workshop will cover emergency planning, evacuation routes, and available community resources, as reported by Click2Houston.
Despite federal funding cuts to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and FEMA, local officials continue hurricane preparedness efforts. Commissioner Briones said, "We know it’s not a matter of if the next big storm will hit, but when," according to the Harris County Precinct 4. Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher criticized the funding cuts and said she will work to restore funding. Precinct 4 is holding workshops with partner organizations to provide planning resources and is distributing free portable air conditioning units until June 13. The National Weather Service predicts up to 19 named storms this season, including as many as five major hurricanes.
Harris County Precinct 4 is preparing for hurricane season by maintaining infrastructure and pre-positioning backup generators and emergency supplies. Cooling centers and distribution sites will support vulnerable populations during power outages or extreme heat. Lance Wood said, "As hurricane season approaches, it’s important to be prepared." The commissioner confirmed support will be provided "before, during, and after" storms. Details on workshops, resources, and assistance programs are on Precinct 4’s website.
