Henderson could soon be making room in its trophy case for a third Gold Medal as the city has been named a finalist for the prestigious 2025 Gold Medal Award for park and recreation services. The accolade is dished out by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AARPA) in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), which is kind of like the Oscars for parks and rec departments – without the red carpet and teary acceptance speeches, as reported by the City of Henderson.

This isn't the Henderson's first rodeo; the city previously won the Gold Medal Award in 2014 and 1999. According to an announcement on the City of Henderson's official website, the city is also flexing its muscles with a top 25 park ranking in the country by the Trust for Public Land's ParkScore® index. With these accolades, Henderson is showcasing its commitment to not just maintaining, but also elevating, the quality of life for its residents.

"We are thrilled to be a finalist once again for the National Gold Medal Award, a testament to the value we place on planning our premier parks, trails and other recreational amenities," said Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero. The city’s Parks and Recreation team, according to Romero, is one of the "most highly regarded teams in the nation," as stated by the City of Henderson. There's no question that the City Council and locals alike are buzzing with pride as they rally behind their parks department, gearing up for what could be another big win in September.

Henderson is kind of a big deal when it comes to its parks and rec services, with 74 parks, more than 300 miles of trails, and eight recreation centers just to start. You add that to the six aquatic facilities and nearly 2,000 acres of parks, trails, and civic grounds, and you've got a recipe for a pretty blissed-out community. It seems that this city has figured out how to strike a balance between developing a robust infrastructure and keeping things accessible and budget-friendly. Premier parks and recreation offerings are central to the city's strategic priority of being a Healthy, Livable, Sustainable City, and apparently, they're doing it right, as per the City of Henderson.
