The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners is once again calling for nominations for its Youth Excellence and Achievement (YEA!) Awards, a yearly event that honors the commendable efforts of young individuals making a positive impact within their community. These awards signal a recognition of leadership, volunteerism or community service, and success against considerable odds, as reported by HCFL.gov. Nominations for the distinguished awards can be submitted online through Aug. 15.

The awards are open to middle and high school students, and seek to highlight those who showcase 21st Century skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity in various domains, be it through academic leadership, extracurricular activities, or community service. According to the county's announcement, one middle school student and one high school student will be selected for each of the three categories. In a statement obtained by HCFL.gov, these students are described as "shining examples of young people dedicating themselves to improving their community and shaping its future."

Last year's ceremony manifested a display of youthful vigor and commitment that would make any locale proud. Among the honorees were Grayson Zurlage, for his successful charity campaigns aiding veterans in Hillsborough County; and Shreyashi Bodaka, the founder of a nonprofit providing healing through music and movement. Another notable recipient was Lauren Kimball, who managed to integrate her love for technology into a charitable cause, aiding children across Florida.

Judah Regans, despite being nonverbal due to a rare disorder, was celebrated for his athletic and academic achievements, along with his positive spirit. However, Jordyn Gourley, a senior at Newsome High School showed the nation what grit truly means. Despite a childhood cancer diagnosis and the resulting physical challenges, she maintained an impressive academic record, actively volunteered, and served as a national spokesperson for a cancer foundation. Their stories were documented by HCFL.gov as examples of what the youth in Hillsborough County have been able to accomplish amidst adversity.

To witness the past year's recipients and to understand the full extent of their achievements, the public is encouraged to watch the 2024 YEA! Awards, which can be accessed online.
