Travelers heading to or through Hilo International Airport might need to adjust their late-night schedules as the airport's main runway undergoes essential maintenance work. According to the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT), general repairs will shut down the primary airstrip, with work occurring under the shroud of darkness from 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. between June 23 and today.

The operations to quickly repair pavement and seal cracks will necessitate the closure of Taxiway A and Runway 8-26, but flights will continue to operate using the alternate runway, 3-21. This scheduling of work is consciously done at night to ostensibly minimize inconvenience to passengers and disruptions to airline operations, though some impact seems inevitable. The nighttime window also aims to ostensibly reduce the project's overall timeline.

According to the HDOT, all planned maintenance is subject to the whims of weather, with HDOT noting that the work, while potentially disruptive, is critical to "ensure safety for all aircraft operations." During the closures, travelers and local residents may notice a shift in typical airport noise and traffic patterns as aircraft are rerouted to the alternate runway.

HDOT has apologized for any inconvenience caused by the night work, emphasizing that these efforts are part of an ongoing commitment to maintain the integrity and safety of airport infrastructures. The department is striving to keep the disruptions as brief and as minimal as possible, acknowledging the essential nature of the work being done. "HDOT appreciates the public’s understanding as the work must be done to ensure safety for all aircraft operations," said the department in a statement outlined on their official website.
