Honolulu is holding on to a stretch of moderate to locally breezy east-southeast trade winds through Monday, as informed by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Honolulu. A surface trough near the islands is to thank for steering these winds our way. Weather-wise, expect showers that favor east and southeast facing slopes and coasts, especially during the night and early morning hours. Meanwhile, leeward areas aren't left dry, with afternoon showers fueled by the sea breezes.
For those navigating the Hawaiian skies, today's breezy east-southeasterly trades are anticipated. Patches of low clouds and showers could lead to mountain obscuration and temporary visibility issues, primarily on the windward and mauka sides. Advisories are out there, with NWS issuing an AIRMET Sierra due to mountain obscuration across multiple stretches of the islands. Conditions should pick up as morning turns to afternoon.
Boaters should take note: the NWS continues the Small Craft Advisory (SCA) for the waters around Maui and the Big Island until Monday evening. As the week starts, the trade winds are forecast to veer east-northeast, which may jostle the zones covered under the SCA and extend their duration through the latter half of the workweek.
Surf's down on the north shore as the current northwest swell begins to wane, in line with a typical June day, but don't hang up your surfboard just yet. A small swell from the southwest could give the south shore a nudge late Tuesday into Wednesday. East-facing shores should brace for waves picking up Monday through Wednesday – a direct result of those persistent trades we've been talking about.
If you're hitting the ocean, be prepared for conditions that match the weather's temper. A Small Craft Advisory is keeping certain waters on the cautious side until 6 PM HST Monday, covering zones including Maui County Windward Waters, Pailolo Channel, Alenuihaha Channel, along with Big Island Windward and Leeward Waters. It's a sign that caution and preparedness should be your copilots whether you're above the waves or riding them.
