As Houston grapples with a scorching heatwave, local waters have sadly claimed nine lives this year, prompting officials to urgently renew their warnings about water safety. According to Click2Houston, Harris County is experiencing a tragic uptick in drownings, with two young toddlers the latest victims this past week.
With the mercury set to stubbornly climb into the triple digits, Constable Mark Hermann from Precinct 4 has been keen to stress the need to maintain constant vigilance around water. Moreover, as families seek to cool off in lakes, pools, and other bodies of water, the potential for incidents only heightens. "Watching children closely without distractions and ensuring they are within arm's reach" is one of several tips Hermann recommended in a statement obtained by Click2Houston.
This series of fatalities has touched the very fabric of the community, evident in the heart-wrenching recollections of Rachel Campbell, whose child Judah Brown drowned in 2016. "Judah was a bright, energetic, loving child. He loved his family. He loved to play,” Campbell recounted in an interview with Click2Houston. She now leads The Judah Brown Project to advocate for greater awareness and safety in water-related activities.
The constable's office is leveraging social media to spread awareness, as revealed in a post, where May, the start of the summer season, was declared National Water Safety Month. “With drowning being the leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1-4, it is crucial to know how to be safe in and around water,” urged a post on the official Facebook page, and advised the public to follow them at Precinct 4's Facebook page for more safety tips and updates. Kennedy Conlee, an aquatics director at the YMCA, warned Click2Houston, “You’re not gonna hear them start to drown or become distressed in the water. It is silent and can happen in less than 10 seconds.”
As temperatures continue to soar and more individuals inevitably seek refuge in the cooling embrace of water, community leaders and advocates like Rachel Campbell remain resolute in their message – safety must be a relentless priority. This call to action has never been more poignant than now, as Judah would have celebrated his 12th birthday this Tuesday.
