Houston marked DJ Screw Day on Friday, an annual event honoring Robert Earl Davis Jr., the Texas native known for creating the "chopped and screwed" music style. Click2Houston shared how the community observes the day to remember his life and legacy.
According to Click2Houston, the celebration for DJ Screw included local rappers freestyling over slowed-down beats, a style he created in the 1990s that became part of Houston's hip-hop scene. His mixtapes sold thousands of copies in a few days, and the sound was often linked to "lean," a codeine-based drink connected to his death in November 2000. The event also featured car shows displaying SLAB culture, with custom cars that had candy paint, swangas, neon lights, and some honoring DJ Screw.
SCREWFEST 2025 will be held at The Encore, 2301 Main Street in Houston, TX, and DJ Screw Day 2025 is scheduled for July 5 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. These events celebrate the legacy of DJ Screw, a pivotal figure in Houston’s hip-hop scene who passed away on November 16, 2000, from a codeine overdose in a local recording studio. The city continues to honor his cultural impact, with “June 27” recognized as an anthem and multiple events planned to keep his influence alive, as mentioned by CW39
