The Houston Police Foundation has announced plans to break ground on a state-of-the-art firearms training center, an initiative aimed at bolstering law enforcement preparedness and public safety. According to local news outlet Click2Houston, the foundation is investing $10.5 million into the facility, which is expected to be operational by early 2026.
Located at 17000 Aldine Westfield Road on the city's north side, near Bush Intercontinental Airport, the facility will boast a sprawling 44,000 square feet of space dedicated to advanced firearms training. This includes a climate-controlled indoor shooting range capable of accommodating 20 100-yard shooting lanes. In addition to shooting ranges, Houston Police Academy will see the integration of two classrooms, offices, and an armory, as reported by KHOU.
Funding for the project comes entirely from private donations – a strategic move intended to construct the facility without the use of taxpayer money. Houston billionaire Tilman Fertitta, chairman of the Houston Police Foundation, personally contributed $2.5 million for its construction. As an acknowledgment of his substantial donation, the facility is set to be named the "Fertitta Family Firearms Training Facility."
With the addition of life-like simulations and year-round operational capabilities, regardless of weather conditions, the center aims to provide the Houston Police Department with an enhanced platform for honing their skills. "This project is a crucial investment in public safety," Fertitta said, emphasizing the facility's role in equipping officers "with the best tools and environment to prepare for the challenges they face every day," as he told Click2Houston. Construction is scheduled to commence mid-June, reflecting the urgency placed on the development of law enforcement capabilities within the city.
