Two Houston police officers and a truck driver were hospitalized following a collision in Settegast. The incident occurred just before 12:30 p.m. yesterday, when a patrol car, said to be responding to a call, was struck by a pickup truck that emerged from a stop sign at Joy Street into the path of the southbound police officers on North Wayside Drive, as reported by ABC13.
The circumstances leading to the crash are currently under scrutiny, particularly concerning the presence of beer cans, which authorities found discarded around the crash site, according to Click2Houston. Relatives of the driver, who maintain his innocence, have cast a different light on the matter, explaining that the cans could be linked to his practice of collecting them for recycling purposes.
All three individuals involved in the collision, the two officers and the truck driver, received medical attention at Memorial Hermann for minor injuries. ABC13 shared the driver's family’s account of his condition, noting that he was "bruised and bloodied" and had received a head wound requiring staples, with further scans performed to exclude more severe trauma.
While the police department is exploring the possibility of intoxication as a factor in the crash, the driver's community ties surfaced in an interview with his neighbor, Annie Russell, who told ABC13, "Well, he keeps beer cans, or soda cans, or whatever type of cans in the back of the vehicle because whatever type of cans he gives it to the elderly lady across the street because she recycles." She added that this activity has been a longstanding habit, benefitting her own recycling endeavors. Meanwhile, the identities of the police officers and the driver have not been disclosed at this time, and no charges have been reported as of yet. Investigations are underway to better understand the details of this incident, as both reports raise unanswered questions.
