In Howard County, the Health Department has teamed up with local libraries and law enforcement to tackle the somber issue of firearm-related suicides and accidents through a gun lock giveaway initiative. Announced in May, the free gun locks can be picked up at Elkridge and East Columbia library branches. Dr. Maura J. Rossman, Howard County Health Officer, stressed the intention behind the campaign, stating, "Firearm-related suicides are a public health crisis—and a preventable one," as reported by Howard County Government's website. According to their data, more than a third of all suicide deaths in the county from 2019 through 2023 involved a firearm.
County Executive Calvin Ball backed the initiative, emphasizing the importance of preventing suicides and accidental injuries in an interview with Howard County's website, “One suicide is one too many. Unfortunately, fire-arm related suicides account for more than one-third of all suicide deaths in Howard County. However, it has been proven that safe storage of firearms reduces the risk of suicide and unintentional injury." Nearly 200 gun locks have been distributed to date, with the aim of not just preventing self-harm but also mitigating accidental shootings, especially among children who might come across unsecured guns.
The collaboration with the libraries is a strategic choice, aligning with community goals of inclusivity and connection. Tonya Aikens, President and CEO of the Howard County Library System, told Howard County's website, "This partnership aligns with our strategic plan to create an inclusive, connected community where everyone feels they belong." Aikens cited the 2023 Surgeon General’s report, highlighting social connection as a potent guard against self-harm. Gun lock availability in libraries serves as a community touchpoint for individuals facing mental health crises.
Community members interested in securing a free gun lock can visit the Elkridge Branch Library or the East Columbia Branch Library, with no identification required for collection. Additional information on safe firearm storage and mental health resources can be found at the Howard County Health Department's website.
