Following a collision on Thursday afternoon where an 18-wheeler struck a bridge, Interstate 35 in Georgetown has reopened to traffic, with repairs underway to mend the structural damage incurred. As reported by KVUE, the accident took place just north of State Highway 195, prompting the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to limit I-35 to a single lane and reroute traffic to the frontage road due to concerns of potential bridge damage.
Recovery efforts resulted in the normalization of Interstate 35’s traffic flow before 8:30 p.m., though the County Road 143 bridge remains closed and is anticipated to require several days for repairs. TxDOT is committed to ensuring the bridge’s safety before reopening it to traffic, as they continue assessing the extent of the damage.
Local authorities were quick to respond to the accident, as detailed by FOX 7 Austin. The Georgetown Police Department revealed that all northbound lanes on I-35 were initially constricted following the incident, causing backups. Drivers were, and still are, advised to expect some delays while traveling through the area and suggested to find alternate routes when possible.
The duration that road users would face disruptions was initially uncertain, and authorities have advised ongoing caution and patience. As cleanup and repair operations persist, the public is urged to stay informed on traffic updates and road closures to plan their commutes accordingly, ensuring minimal congestion and further incidents.
