In a decidedly non-dramatic fashion befitting of a repetitive inconvenience, Jacksonville Armada FC supporters are once again trekking to an alternate venue for their soccer viewing pleasures. According to News4Jax, a "last-minute cancellation" by Edward Waters University (EWU) has forced the team to relocate its Saturday games to Patton Park. The decision, made public through an email sent to fans, was attributed to EWU President Dr. A. Zachary Faison Jr.'s decision to suspend "all vendor and event contracts at EWU for the foreseeable future."
A chorus of frustration arose from fans at Patton Park during the games as they criticized the recurring issue of sudden venue changes. Despite the festive atmosphere with drums and chants, fans expressed discontent over the last-minute switch—a sentiment echoed in fan reactions and captured by Action News Jax. The persistent changes have sparked calls for a permanent stadium to stabilize the club's home game locations and prevent further disruption.
Jacksonville Armada's logistical curveball has highlighted the team's turbulent history with home fields, underscored by Section 904 president Sebastian Cardona's statement to First Coast News that he has followed the team to eight different fields through the years. EWU issued a statement citing a "facilities management challenge" as the reason for the temporary suspension of their agreement with the team, a move that further exacerbates the uncertainty surrounding the Armada's game-day venues.
As the team grapples to accommodate yet another change, the silver lining of a future home stadium glimmers on the horizon. A soft groundbreaking event took place in January for a new venue on A Philip Randolph Boulevard, with expectations now to fully open by next March. However, fans cannot help but feel the sting of displacement in a season where they anticipated rooting from stands they could finally call their own. EWU has expressed hopes to rectify the situation in time for the Armada's remaining four home games, as recorded by First Coast News. For now, fans remain steadfast, like Josh Richburg, who arrived for the game at Patton Park, saying, "We're going to be out here supporting them no matter what."
