On Wednesday, a fire tore through a Jacksonville apartment complex, leaving dozens of residents without a home. The blaze, which occurred in the Commonwealth area’s Riverbank Apartments, required the intervention of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. According to First Coast News, the Red Cross stepped in to assist 34 individuals, a group comprising of 25 adults and nine children, providing them with essentials such as food, clothing, and temporary housing, among other forms of support.

The fire, which first responders tried to quickly contain, is reported to have begun in a bedroom before quickly spreading to the attic of the building, leaving much of the structure with significant smoke damage. Following the incident, the American Red Cross offered to help ease the resultant burden of displacement for the affected families. "Volunteers helped provide financial assistance for the families affected by the blaze that impacted 12 apartment units," a report by News4Jax detailed.

In an addition to the immediate response, the power was shut off for the entire building to ensure safety, albeit leaving residents in the dark. Officials promised to restore power as soon as feasibly possible, with expectations pointing to a restoration by Thursday. Fortunately, despite the severity of the fire, there were no reported injuries amongst tenants or firefighters. The cause of the fire remained under investigation by the State Fire Marshal, as noted by coverage from Action News Jax.

Those looking to contribute to the relief efforts or who are in need of assistance were encouraged to reach out to the local Red Cross chapter for support.
