Wake Forest has officially filled its top law enforcement position. After a comprehensive search for a new leader following former Chief Jeff Leonard's retirement on February 1, the town has appointed Julius Jefferson as the permanent Police Chief. Jefferson, who was serving as the Interim Chief since Leonard's departure, brings almost two decades of experience with the Wake Forest Police Department to the role.

According to a statement from Wake Forest Town Manager Kip Padgett, "Chief Jefferson has shown outstanding leadership throughout his nearly 20-year tenure with the Wake Forest Police Department." Padgett praised Jefferson for establishing strong relations with not only the department's officers and staff but also with town leadership, and the community at large. The commitment Jefferson has displayed to integrity and safety was a deciding factor in his appointment to the permanent role, as per the Town of Wake Forest's news release.

Jefferson started his career in law enforcement with the Wake County Sheriff's Office in 1996. His work saw him rise from Detention Officer to Detention Sergeant. Following that, he underwent law enforcement training at Vance-Granville Community College and joined the Wake Forest Police Department in September 2006. His roles there have been diverse, spanning from Patrol Officer to his most recent position before becoming interim chief.

With an educational background that includes an associate's degree in criminal justice and a bachelor’s degree from UNC Pembroke, Jefferson is well-equipped academically for his new role. His professional development is as thorough, having completed programs like the Administrative Officers Management Program and FBI-LEEDA Trilogy, which focus on leadership and ethics in law enforcement. In his time away from policing, Jefferson takes pleasure in hobbies such as watching movies, working with wood, vehicle maintenance, and showing cars at events.

As Jefferson settles into the chief’s office, the Wake Forest community can expect to see his continued dedication play out in the department's activities and policies.
