Motorists in Kalāheo should prepare for a series of road closures along Poʻohiwi Road as the Department of Water (DOW) undertakes essential resurfacing work. According to an announcement by the DOW, the roadwork is scheduled to commence last Monday and is expected to wrap up by Friday, with operations running from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, barring weather delays. This work is a component of the broader Kalāheo Water Systems Improvements Project and will be managed by the Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Inc.
Given the narrow confines of Poʻohiwi Road, which offer scant shoulder space, closure periods have been decided in 50-minute bursts, granting passage to local residents intermittently. The road will be closed from 8 a.m. to 8:50 a.m., with a brief 10-minute window for traffic to proceed, then again will close at 9 a.m., and continue this pattern throughout the workday, as per the DOW’s specified schedule. This maneuver, allowing traffic to flow in the scheduled times, aims to limit the inconvenience posed to residents by the necessary disruptive work.
During the resurfacing project, parking will also be restricted along Poʻohiwi Road and near the intersection with Puʻuwai Road. Motorists are encouraged to abide by the signs and directions provided by flaggers in the work zones, and they should anticipate needing extra time to navigate the affected stretches of road.
For those requiring further details or having inquiries related to the roadwork, Scott Suga at the DOW is the point of contact. The DOW urges people to stay informed and to reach out with any questions that might clarify how the resurfacing might affect their daily routines. In an effort to keep residents looped in, the DOW can be contacted at 808-245-5411 to address any community concerns that may arise as the resurfacing progresses.
