During the pursuit, deputies encountered an armed individual on the 1000 block of Avenue J12, and when an attempt was made to detain the suspect, he opened fire, striking one deputy in the upper torso, according to details obtained from CBS News Los Angeles. The Sheriff's Information Bureau highlighted that following the deputy-involved shooting, multiple independent investigations are already underway, these including separate inquiries by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau along with oversight by the Office of the Inspector General and subsequent reviews by both the Critical Incident Review Panel and the Executive Force Review Committee to understand every facet of the incident. In their statement, the Sheriff's Department also emphasized the role of Constitutional Policing Advisors and noted the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, will determine if criminal charges are to be brought forth or if the use of force was justified.
To aid the ongoing investigation, the Sheriff's Department is urging anyone with information about this event to contact the Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500 or report anonymously to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 or through their website at lacrimestoppers.org.
