In the early morning of last Sunday, Las Vegas became the stage for a dramatic sequence of events, as officers faced gunfire and suspects were left wounded. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department received a call regarding a shooting at a residence on Hickam Avenue around 4:50 a.m., though fortunately, no one was injured. Following this, LVMPD detectives, among them Detective Strahinja Pavlovic, embarked on an operation that led them to two vehicles believed to be connected to the shooting.
According to a briefing by Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren and supported by the LVMPD's statement, a suspect later leaped over a wall and opened fire at the detectives. With this unfolding on Lone Mountain Road and Scott Robinson Boulevard, gunshots rang out, striking an LVMPD vehicle. Shortly after, Detective Pavlovic himself became a target when Daiveon Stone, allegedly driving the black Nissan, was reported to have fired his weapon at him, resulting in Pavlovic returning fire.
The suspects then raced to a nearby hospital, where they were detained. In the chaos, two individuals were shot and required medical attention; one was soon released after sustaining non-life-threatening injuries while the other remains hospitalized but stable. LVMPD officers emerged from this harrowing incident uninjured, amidst a night where the line between predator and prey seemed perilously thin.
The aftermath of the gunfire and the ensuing investigation by LVMPD's Critical Incident Review Team, with a focus on the officers' use of force concerning departmental policy and training practices, is currently ongoing.
