The Department of Public Health issued warnings against ocean activities at several popular coastal spots. Elevated bacteria levels have led health officials to caution against swimming, surfing, and playing in ocean waters at various locations, including the upscale environs of The Bel Air Bay Club at Will Rogers State Beach and the frequently Instagrammed Venice Beach near the Windward storm drain.
In a communication not entirely unfamiliar to residents who treasure the county's shoreline, specific areas have been highlighted as potential health risks. The warnings encompass 100 yards from both the club border fence at The Bel Air Bay Club and from the storm drain at Windward Venice Beach. Paradise Cove's Ramirez Creek and Topanga County Beach's Castlerock Storm Drain share similar restrictions; Santa Monica Pier and Mothers Beach in Marina Del Rey also made the list with advisories spanning 100 yards from the pier and encompassing the entire swim area, respectively. Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro is under a complete swim area advisory as well.
This isn't the first ripple of concern for Los Angeles County, which has seen its fair share of beach warnings in the past. Poor water quality poses significant health risks, primarily due to bacteria, viruses, and other pollutants that can lead to illnesses in those exposed. As per the announcement, these warnings follow test results that found bacterial levels exceeding health standards.
For residents and visitors seeking to stay informed about their beach-bound prospects, the County's beach closure hotline provides 24-hour recorded information on beach conditions. Moreover, an online map detailing the impacted locales is available through the Public Health website.
