This past weekend, Los Angeles County celebrated Juneteenth with historic flair in Sun Village, at the Jackie Robinson Park, where local dignitaries, including LA County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger, paid homage to the significance of this date. In a statement released by Barger's office, the Chair emphasized the community's longstanding dedication to the holiday, long before its recognition as a national day of freedom. "For over fifty years, Sun Village commemorated the day and to make sure the public at large knows what it stands for and why it’s an important day to celebrate," Barger said.

Sun Village notably serves as a historical landmark within the county, representing one of the first communities where ownership of property by African American families was possible, fostering opportunities for building generational wealth. This year's festivities were marked by live performances, family activities, and various tributes to community leaders, as confirmed by the local Department of Parks and Recreation.

The event also featured a keynote address by retired U.S. Navy Fleet Master Chief Petty Officer April D. Beldo, an Antelope Valley native whose career milestones include being the first African-American woman to assume several high-ranking naval positions. In recognition of her 34 years of service and engagement within the community, Belder was honored by Supervisor Barger along with Lillian Jackson-James, who received the Juneteenth Bright Star Award for her involvement and leadership within the community.

Continuing the tradition of honoring local heroes, Supervisor Barger also acknowledged eight Grand Marshals for their contributions to Sun Village: Deputy R. Johnny Oats, Barbara Smith, Virginia Jo Miller, James Brooks, Gail Brooks, Pastor Emmanuel Oggs, Bonnie Isom, and Dr. Vanessa Thomas. These individuals, hailing from various walks of life, have each played their role in enriching the fabric of their community with their distinct services and advocacy.
