Residents in Malibu are facing the likelihood of more frequent and sustained power outages as Southern California Edison (SCE) warns of an increased need for Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPSs) this year. SCE has cited escalating wildfire risks due to dry vegetation and elevated temperatures as the primary reasons for this decision. Already having implemented three PSPSs in 2025, the company anticipates the need for additional shut-offs during the fire season, which stretches from October to December. City of Malibu’s official announcement cautions that these power disruptions could last 8 hours or more.
While Malibu has faced previous wildfires, like the Franklin and Palisades Fires, that consumed much of the combustible vegetation in eastern areas, SCE notes risks persist. As part of their advisory, driven by the mix of Santa Ana winds and dry fuels, residents are asked to remain vigilant and prepared for potential fires that could threaten lives and properties, which, compounded by power outages, represent an added challenge during the wildfire season.
Malibu citizens are urged to stay informed and ready for outages. SCE and the City of Malibu recommend signing up for alerts and monitoring local news, including through the newly expanded coverage of 99.1 FM KBUU during PSPS events. Furthermore, keeping electronic devices fully charged ahead of anticipated shutoffs and considering backup power sources is suggested. Tips provided by the City of Malibu also include planning for refrigerated medications in emergencies and understanding how to manually operate electric gates and garage doors when power is unavailable.
Investments in coolers and cold packs, in anticipation of outages, are also recommended, ensuring perishables are kept fresh. Lastly, purchasing ice is suggested before a blackout occurs.
