Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley responded to the County Board of Supervisors' decision not to approve the proposed redevelopment of the McGovern Park Senior Center. The decision halts plans to update the facility, which serves the county’s older residents, according to the Milwaukee County. “My administration's proposal to reimagine the McGovern Park Senior Center was a good-faith effort to deliver a sustainable future for a critical community asset,” Crowley said.

The recent vote could affect senior services in Milwaukee County. County Executive Crowley said, “The truth is stark: there is no funding available to address the growing maintenance issues at the current facility or the other county senior centers.” The rejected redevelopment plan would have brought in over $20 million in outside funding through Low-Income Housing Tax Credits and HUD resources. Without this funding, the facility may continue to decline, and other senior centers in the county could face downsizing or closure.

Milwaukee County Executive Crowley said the county will keep working on other ways to support its aging population after a redevelopment plan failed to pass. “We must be clear-eyed,” he said, adding, “This vote delays, but does not eliminate, the difficult decisions ahead.” The county plans to work with the board, local partners, and residents to find community-based solutions. The vote reflects ongoing challenges in meeting the needs of older residents while managing limited resources and aging infrastructure.
