Milwaukee County Supervisors are fed up with what they describe as a lack of accountability and transparency within the Sheriff's Office, especially in regards to the handling of suicide prevention and care for those in custody at the Milwaukee County Jail. Supervisors Juan Miguel Martinez and Justin Bielinski have voiced their exasperation following a series of tragic events involving in-custody deaths, including the recent suicide attempt of a 19-year-old transgender individual and the fatalities of two men aged 49 and 33, as recounted in a Milwaukee County news release.
"These are not isolated incidents. This is a crisis," Supervisor Martinez stated, expressing frustration over the continuous flow of funds to the Sheriff's Office without corresponding improvements or communication. Martinez emphasized that essential departments are suffering as a result of this imbalance. Supervisor Bielinski echoed the severity of the issue, highlighting the County Board’s efforts, which include salary increases, a requested jail audit, and an expanded internal study to address staffing challenges. Despite these measures, Bielinski noted that deaths and poor conditions persist within the jail, according to Milwaukee County.
In their push for change, the Supervisors are encouraging public involvement at the upcoming Judiciary, Law Enforcement, and General Services (JLEGS) Committee meeting, asserting the importance of testimonies from those directly affected by the jail's conditions. This call is anchored on the belief that community voices are critical to bring about accountability and drive substantial reforms within the Sheriff's Office. Particularly, the Supervisors seek to hear from families who have lost loved ones and individuals who faced neglect or mistreatment while in custody.
The meeting is scheduled for June 17 at the Milwaukee County Courthouse and will focus on the outcomes of the recent jail audit. According to Supervisors Martinez and Bielinski, community feedback on these findings will play a key role in informing efforts to improve transparency and implement changes aimed at protecting the welfare and rights of incarcerated individuals.
