Montgomery County is decked out in rainbows and pride this month as the Council commemorates Pride Month. The official event, set for June 24 at 11:30 a.m., is a testament to the county's commitment to its LGBTQ+ residents, with a public acknowledgment of their narratives of resilience and triumph. Council President Kate Stewart highlighted the occasion, stating, "Pride Month is a time to honor the history, resilience, and voices of our LGBTQ+ communities in Montgomery County and across the world," in a press release obtained by Montgomery County Government. Stewart further emphasized the importance of recognizing achievements and advocating for equality and human rights.
Displaying a stance against discrimination, Councilmember Evan Glass commented on national politics, mentioning the Trump administration's stance on LGBTQ+ issues. "As the Trump administration tries to erase LGBTQ+ people from this country’s history and culture, we must further uplift our community and embrace the rich diversity that makes Montgomery County a beautifully inclusive place to call home," Glass said during a council meeting. He also expressed pride in honoring LGBTQ+ Pride month, underscoring the ongoing struggle for civil rights and liberties.
This year's theme, "Unbreakable Pride and Unshakeable Power," underscores the indomitable spirit of the LGBTQ+ community. A specially produced video will showcase interviews with local Pride leaders, sharing how they contribute to the community's vibrancy. The council will feature interviews with significant figures like Dr. Amena Johnson, Montgomery County’s LGBTQ+ Community Liaison, and entrepreneurs Makeda Richardson and Angel McNamara of Fight Into Fitness, alongside Kenneth Skidmore and Julio Febrer from Botanero Restaurant.
The Pride Month event will be easily accessible to all county residents, streamed live across multiple platforms, including the Council's Facebook page, YouTube channel, and official website. Everyone is invited to join in, celebrating the stories that weave the fabric of the county's inclusive environment, with the event also airing on television on the regional Comcast/RCN channels 996/1056 and Verizon channel 30, as listed on their website. These leaders making a difference in our communities will be celebrated in a documentary, having been interviewed for the occasion.
