Montgomery County has stepped forward to celebrate the contributions and legacies of six African American community leaders who have left indelible marks on society. These esteemed individuals were honored with the ‘Living Legend Awards’ at the BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown, as reported by the Montgomery County Government's official release.
The event, held on the evening of June 20 and nestled within Montgomery County’s 28th Annual Juneteenth celebration, recognized the varied and vital contributions of each honoree in areas such as justice, advocacy, the arts, education, and public service. According to the County Executive Marc Elrich's statement, as per Montgomery County Government's official release, these trailblazers "have helped shape the character of Montgomery County through service, courage and a deep commitment to justice and opportunity." Celebratory proceedings continued into June 21, offering cultural and community engagements at the same venue.
The awards ceremony highlighted the significant achievements of James Baker, a centenarian committed to mentorship and civic engagement; Dr. Judi Moore Latta, a pioneering figure in public media and education; Catherine Matthews, whose 50-year government career fostered local development; and Jo Ann Owens, a passionate advocate for education and faith-based upliftment. Celebrity was also given to Dr. Betty Holston Smith, a relentless proponent of holistic health and fitness, and Maryland State Delegate W. Gregory Wims, an influential proponent for civil rights and community empowerment.
Montgomery County’s recognition of such steadfast and committed individuals underscores a broader commitment to honor those who have molded the community's character through tireless service. "The African American Living Legend Award honorees represent the very best of Montgomery County," Elrich stated in the official release. Through echelons of service, advocacy, and leadership, these individuals have elevated Montgomery County, paving pathways towards a more just and equitable future. Their contributions remain foundational as the county progresses, and the honoring of their legacy is a fitting salute to their profound influence.
