Alfredo Vasquez, a member of a Moorpark gang, has been convicted for his violent conduct in a gang-motivated assault that took place on a hiking trail in Simi Valley. According to a press release from the District Attorney's Office, on July 9, 2020, Vasquez and an accomplice confronted a man and his friend while hiking. When questioned by Vasquez with a typical gang challenge, the victim's reply was met with a knife attack, resulting in serious injury, including two stab wounds to the chest and a slashed forearm. The victim managed to flee and find help, which led to Vasquez's arrest and conviction.
The prosecution team, led by Senior Deputy District Attorney Hayley Moyer of the Ventura County District Attorney's Office Major Crime Gang Unit, carefully laid out evidence that helped secure the jury's guilty verdict on June 4, 2025. The evidence included the victim's blood-stained shirt, DNA from a grey shirt linked to Vasquez, and surveillance footage that captured the victim and two individuals matching the description of the attackers near the crime scene. The press release states, "Ventura County residents should feel safe and secure while hiking on our beautiful trails, not worried about encountering gang violence," echoing Moyer's sentiments after the verdict.
Vasquez, who remains in custody without bail, is now facing a 14-year sentence in state prison, underscoring the gravity of his crimes. The jury found him guilty of assault with a deadly weapon and affirmed the special allegations relating to the gang-related nature of the crime and the great bodily injury inflicted. The conviction also highlighted several aggravating factors, including the level of violence and the use of a weapon in the attack.
The trial's outcome sends a clear message about the consequences of gang-related violence, particularly in spaces like public hiking trails where such acts are not only rare but deeply unsettling. Judge Paul Baelly found true that the crime involved great violence, the defendant was armed with and used a weapon, and the defendant engaged in violent conduct. Vasquez's sentencing is scheduled for July 3, 2025, in the Ventura County Superior Court.
