With temperatures climbing, the N.C. Department of Labor is urging employers and workers to combat the heat with its "Beat the Heat" campaign. Labor Commissioner Luke Farley, spearheading the initiative, emphasizes easy strategies to avoid heat-related illnesses in the workplace. "Heat illness is preventable," Farley stated, pushing for the adoption of fundamental measures: rest, water, and shade. Acknowledging that safety is a collaborative effort, Farley implores the community to unite for the health and well-being of its labor force.
The program provides resources that are easily accessible, such as a heat safety calculator, a real-time heat index app, and educational materials like hazard alerts and training videos. These are tailored for a range of outdoor work environments, inclusive of agriculture-specific safety resources, putting emphasis on podcasts and sample safety programs. Workers and employers can visit NCDOL’s Heat Injury and Illness Prevention page for more information and to download these tools.
In tandem with digital resources, the NCDOL is distributing free wallet-sized cards that feature a QR code opening a gateway to heat safety resources on mobile devices. This tangible aid seeks to provide immediate access to crucial information for workers on the go.
Commissioner Farley's message is clear: "This isn't about new regulations. It’s about common-sense steps and working together to protect the people who provide for they’re families and power our economy." With the shared responsibility of ensuring workplace safety, the "Beat the Heat" campaign aims to equip North Carolina's workforce with knowledge and tools to stay safe under the punishing summer sun, as per the NCDOL's release.
