After months of public pressure, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has signed a new law with tougher penalties for animal cruelty. Called Reba's Law, it's named after an English bulldog who died last summer in extreme heat. The law makes some animal abuse crimes felonies and shows the state is taking a stronger stand against cruelty to animals, according to FOX5 Vegas.

Described as a significant victory by animal rights groups, the law modifies the legal consequences for animal cruelty, elevating them to felony-level crimes. This change could result in longer prison terms and larger fines for offenders. Named after the bulldog found deceased behind a grocery store near the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Reba's fate spurred a widespread campaign for stricter animal welfare laws. As reported by FOX5 Vegas, the bill had faced hurdles in the legislature but ultimately garnered the support needed to pass.

In a statement obtained by KTNV, Assemblywoman Melissa Hardy, who sponsored the bill, shared her gratitude for the legislative members who backed the bill. John Waudby from the Reba's Law animal advocacy group highlighted the sentiment, stating, "We want to thank the legislative members who supported and passed AB 381 known as Reba's Law. We are now assured that those who continue to harm our fur babies will be prosecuted under this new law."

Details given by 8 News Now indicate that the law aims not only to increase penalties but also to give prosecutors a broader spectrum of punishments to better match the crime committed. "Reba’s Law is now officially Nevada State Law! The tireless work of the last year paid off! This law tells the people of Nevada that we will not tolerate cruelty, and we will not allow innocent lives to be harmed without consequence," Melissa Hardy told 8 News Now.

Reba's heartbreaking story gained national attention, leading to outcry and subsequent legislative action. After a grand jury indicted them on charges of animal abuse, Issac Laushaul Jr. and Markeshia Foster were arrested in December 2024, as per 8 News Now.
