Montgomery County government officials, including County Executive Marc Elrich and County Council President Kate Stewart, were present to inaugurate the new 6th District Police Station located at 222 Paramount Park Drive, Gaithersburg, earlier this week, replacing an older, less efficient facility to better serve a growing population. According to a Montgomery County press release, the sustainable design of the new station boasts energy-efficient features, aimed at improving public safety services in both the Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village communities.
County Executive Elrich noted the importance of the modernized facility, stating, per Montgomery County's website, "The new 6th District Police Station is an important project for the County that will strengthen critical emergency services to our residents in an area that has seen tremendous growth." The new station, with its public community room and other facilities, is designed to foster stronger community ties and will accommodate up to 178 department staff and volunteers. The Central Traffic Unit, formed in July 2021, will also be based out of this new station.
This sustainability-driven project features a solar array and a fully electrified building system that aligns with Montgomery County's ambitions to achieve carbon neutrality. With the capability to generate more electricity than it consumes annually, the station sets a precedent as the first public safety NetZero facility in Maryland and one of the first of its kind on the East Coast. Assistant Chief Darren Francke of MCPD expressed gratitude for the successful completion of the long-planned project, reaffirming the commitment to community safety as the area continues to grow.
