New Yorkers are facing a sweltering forecast, as the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory in effect until 7 PM EDT this evening for southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey, and southeast New York. Highs in various boroughs are expected to approach the upper 90s, with heat index values surging above 100 degrees in some areas, according to detailed forecasts from the NWS for Manhattan and similar reports from neighboring boroughs.
Residents of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island can expect similar conditions with slight variations. For instance, Brooklyn's sunny skies today will give way to a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight, with partly cloudy skies and a low around 73 degrees. This pattern of intermittent showers is expected to continue throughout the week, according to the NWS.
The Hazardous Weather Outlook released by the National Weather Service further emphasizes that there is no expected hazardous weather after this heat advisory that would meet the NWS warning criteria for the following days which suggests a relief for New Yorkers who might be worried about prolonged extreme conditions.
While today’s high temperatures may pose health risks for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses, a northeast wind is expected to bring some relief. There is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms across the boroughs tonight and into the weekend. According to detailed forecasts from the NWS, Staten Island can expect steady temperatures with a mix of cloudy skies and chances of rain.
