Travelers in the New York City area now have a new option for direct flights to the Dominican Republic, as Newark Liberty International Airport has launched nonstop service to Las Américas Santo Domingo Airport. The flights are operated by Arajet, the Dominican Republic’s largest airline, offering expanded access for the sizable Dominican community in the NYC region—the largest outside the Dominican Republic, as NBC New York reports.
The service began on Monday, with flights scheduled four times a week and a focus on connecting families, promoting tourism, and supporting economic exchanges. "This new route isn’t just about travel, it’s about cultural connections," Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole stated in Business Wire. "With the largest Dominican community outside the DR right here in the New York-New Jersey region, Arajet’s nonstop service to Santo Domingo strengthens the cultural, economic, and family ties that unite our communities." The inaugural flight included a formal gesture in which dignitaries raised the flags of both nations from the cockpit, marking the launch of the new service and acknowledging the connection between the two regions.
Closer ties between the two countries have been supported in part by the Open Skies Agreement, which facilitates bilateral travel. Arajet, a signatory to the agreement, has broadened its operations across the Americas, now offering service to 28 destinations and reporting a 25% increase in passenger traffic so far this year. As a low-price airline, Arajet's committment to affordable travel was highlighted by Chief Executive Officer Victor Pacheco, who told Business Wire, "Offering this route has been the main objective since the beginning of our operations, with the goal to serve the large Dominican diaspora in New Jersey and New York as well as the many tourists flocking to the Dominican Republic."
The launch of the new route aligns with Arajet’s expansion in Caribbean aviation, one year after beginning operations. Operating a fleet of Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, the airline offers fares starting at $262 USD for round trips and $127 USD one-way to Santo Domingo. The service includes connections to 24 destinations across the region. Newark Liberty International Airport, located near Manhattan and supported by regional transit infrastructure, is positioned to serve as a key access point for travelers in the area.
