North Carolina recently celebrated the achievements of nine individuals who've each left an indelible mark on the state. In a ceremony honoring these distinguished citizens, Governor Josh Stein presented the esteemed Order of the Long Leaf Pine. This recognition is reserved for those who've notably served the state's communities and forged a better society.
Among those honored, as described on the Governor’s official website, was Bobby Kimbrough, the Forsyth County Sheriff known for his dedication to public safety. Maggie Kane also received the accolade for founding A Place at the Table, ensuring those in need found a community and sustenance. In the realm of history and culture, Karen Amspacher has been honored for her directorship at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center, preserving coastal heritage.
Education leaders were not left out, with Dr. Otis Smallwood, Superintendent of Bertie County Schools, recognized for excellence in educational leadership. Reuben Blackwell, once the CEO of Opportunities Industrialization Center of Rocky Mount, was posthumously celebrated for his commitment to workforce development. In an extension of our collective memory, the governor paid homage to Rev. Pauli Murray, a civil rights titan, with a posthumous award that approached acknowledging the past, with an eye toward tomorrow.
The ceremony also shone a light on political advocacy with Ricky Hurtado, remembered for his service both as Chair of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Hispanic/Latino Affairs and as a former state representative. Chavi Koneru, co-founder and Executive Director of North Carolina Asian Americans Together, was named, showing the wide array of communities impacted by the honorees' work. Lastly, the sports community was represented by Phil Ford, Jr., whose skills vaulted him from UNC basketball to the NBA before stepping into a coaching role back home, as per the Office of the Governor's release.
Governor Stein, in a statement obtained by the governor's office, asserted, "I am proud to honor this group of outstanding North Carolinians who have made important contributions to our state and its people." He continued to praise them, saying, "They exemplify the best of North Carolina through their storied careers in government, education, and advocacy." With the presentation of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the state not only recognized these individuals' achievements but also the diverse fields in which they have pioneered progress for North Carolina, as detailed by the Office of the Governor.
