A Baltimore Police officer and a suspect were injured in a confrontation last night, with the incident sparking a substantial law enforcement response in West Baltimore's Upton neighborhood. As reported by CBS News Baltimore, the officer sustained a gunshot wound to the foot and was transported to Shock Trauma, where Police Chief Richard Worley stated the officer remained in fair condition.
The suspect, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital in critical condition after the shootout with police officers. Officers reportedly attempted to stop the man around 7 p.m. near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Laurens Street because they believed he was armed, leading to a chase and a subsequent struggle. During the struggle, the man allegedly discharged a weapon, striking the officer. According to Chief Worley, "the crowd swarmed the officers" as they attempted to provide aid, further complicating the situation. This detail was outlined in a statement detailed by CBS News.
In a separate account provided by WMAR-2 News, Commissioner Worley elaborated on the chain of events, citing that the man was able to break free from police and fired his gun, resulting in the officer's injury. Several officers then returned fire, critically wounding the man.
