Ohio is investing in its streets, not with roadwork, but to curb the tide of violence that plagues its cities. Governor Mike DeWine has set the stage for a fresh influx of grant funding to the tune of over $3 million to bolster local law enforcement agencies and their fight against violent crime, as reported by the official news release from the governor's office.
The Ohio Violent Crime Reduction Grant Program, which has been investing in local safety measures since 2021, with a cumulative total now exceeding $84 million, aims to bring sophisticated technology and innovative practices to the forefront of law enforcement strategy, according to the Governor's office. These funds are distributed across 48 law enforcement agencies in 27 counties, reflecting a statewide commitment to building a foundation of security across its diverse communities.
"The crime reduction strategies funded by this latest round of grants are all focused on protecting residents and making communities safer," Governor DeWine commented, putting a spotlight on the goal of keeping Ohio's neighborhoods free from the shadows of violent crimes. Furthermore, Lt. Governor Jim Tressel, speaking in the same vein, highlighted the dual benefits of these grants: "By supporting local law enforcement with assistance from new technology and equipment, at the same time we also help our communities to be safer places to live, work, and raise a family."
The latest round of funding, marking the program's 14th, directly caters to important tactical areas such as investigative overtime costs, new technology supports for crime reduction, and targeted patrols in high-crime zones – all critical cogs in the machinery of Ohio's community safety. All with the purpose, as stated in the release, to aid local law enforcement agencies in preventing and solving incidents of violent crime.
