As Pride Month kicks off, the City of Pasadena has announced a lineup of events and community programs that aim to uplift and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community. The initiative mirrors nationwide recognition of June as the month to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, a watershed moment in the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights. According to the City of Pasadena's official announcement, residents can expect a variety of inclusive festivities, ranging from a Pride Month Flag Raising to book discussions and craft activities.
The commemorative events are scheduled to begin with the Pride Month Flag Raising on Monday at Pasadena City Hall, where Mayor Victor M. Gordo and the City Council will gather community members to celebrate diversity. In a statement obtained by the City of Pasadena, attendees are encouraged "to wear colorful attire and participate in our community rainbow." Moreover, events like "Queer Ecology" promise to actively reconnect attendees with nature through a unique blend of diversity and inclusion on June 14, as detailed in the city's announcement.
Families and individuals across all age groups are invited to participate in a wealth of activities. Children and their caregivers can take part in the "Heart Felt Pride Garland" event on June 12, where they can craft heartfelt symbols of unity. Meanwhile, the June 28 "Pride Crafternoon" at the Hill Avenue Branch Library offers the chance to create a photo mobile to capture and commemorate Pride Month memories.
Of particular note is the Pride Month Celebration, scheduled to celebrate vibrantly on June 21 at Pasadena City Hall. The city's statement describes an evening filled with "live entertainment, crafts, face painting," and opportunities to connect with local LGBTQIA+ organizations. Another highlight is the online book group for ages 50+, which will discuss "Fairest" by Meredith Talusan on June 21, offering a chance for reflection and literary exploration. Participants can register for these events at the City of Pasadena's library calendar page.
Amid the revelry and recognition, the spirit of Pride Month is deeply rooted in the ongoing journey toward equity and acceptance. For more information on the month's events and to stay updated, residents can visit the City of Pasadena website or follow their social media channels.
