The relentless pursuit of justice in Collin County has been illuminated once more as Detective Hay of the Plano, Texas Police Department has been awarded the prestigious 2025 DA Greg Willis SuperSleuth Award, an accolade bestowed upon only a quintet of detectives annually, recognizing paramount investigative work. Hay's investigative acumen was pivotal in the dismantling of a criminal syndicate, particularly for the incarceration of its ringleader, Sergio Cardenas-Salinas, a twice-deported illegal immigrant who made a nefarious return to perpetrate a spree of home invasions targeting specific ethnic communities within Texas, according to the Collin County Criminal District Attorney's Office.
In an operation that targeted Asian, South Asian, and Middle Eastern families, the perpetrators operated under the assumption that their victims would frequently keep substantial amounts of cash and other valuables within their homes, a rationale that spurred a series of calculated home invasions in the communities of Plano, Prosper, and McKinney, leaving behind a haul of traumatized families and the pressing question of how to address such orchestrated threats, these events are not to be mistaken for run-of-the-mill burglaries as these were acts marked by an air of calculation and premeditated execution. Not only did Detective Hay conduct exhaustive interrogations, following leads as far-reaching as Houston, but he also meticulously mapped data extracted from numerous phones, presenting a picture of coordination and strikes that was irrefutable, culminating in nine arrests and a substantial 37-year sentence handed to Cardenas-Salinas, the post delineated.
The persistent efforts of Detective Hay ensured a profound impact on the community; hence, a dangerous repeat offender now faces a substantial period away from society. This outcome sends a crucial message to those contemplating organized crime in the region. As an unforeseen challenge emerged before the trial about a Spanish-language interview, Detective Hay unfalteringly took it upon himself to stay after working hours, meticulously translating each line, which enabled prosecutors to be sufficiently prepared for the impending court proceedings, as the DA's office recognized in their statement.
