A tense situation unfolded in Van Buren Township, as police responded to a home in the 49000 block of Bog Road on Wednesday around 11:55 a.m., after receiving reports of a man discharging firearms. According to CBS News Detroit, the caller claimed children were in the vicinity when the shooting began. In a move to secure local residents' safety, a shelter-in-place order was swiftly issued.
Local authorities were initially uncertain of the incident's severity, detailing, "At that time, we really didn't know what we had; we didn't know if we had victims. We didn't know if this was going to turn into a barricaded gunman situation, so we put that right away to try to ensure people's safety," as CBS News Detroit reported, quoting Detective Lt. Ken Floro from the Van Buren Township Police Department. Officers set up a perimeter and found the suspect actively shooting from behind his property using a handgun and long gun, upon which the neighbor quickly removed the youths from harm's way.
Local television network FOX 2 Detroit shared footage of the suspect being escorted into a police cruiser. The standoff concluded with the individual's arrest, and the residential order was promptly lifted.
As reported by Audacy, the suspect, a 42-year-old man, was intoxicated at the time of his arrest. Despite initial fears, police now clarify the gunman was not targeting the minors or any individuals specifically, but appeared to be discharging his weapons indiscriminately. This information was echoed by residents who were advised to remain indoors during the incident, "Police arrived and they said... you know, he was shooting his gun. They got the little boys in the house, in the basement. They told all of us to shut our doors, that he had been shooting," recounted Beth Smith, a neighbor.
