Port Milwaukee took center stage yesterday when key political figures converged to celebrate the Great Lakes' massive economic footprint. Congresswoman Gwen Moore, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, Mayor Cavalier Johnson, and Port Director Jackie Q. Carter led the event that shed light on the maritime industry's essential contribution to the regional growth and global trade.
The recent victory in Washington D.C. was a focal point of the gathering, where, secured by the fierce advocacy of Congresswoman Moore, the U.S. Trade Representative ruled to waive a hefty $1.5 million in port fees that had been under scrutiny. Congresswoman Gwen Moore said, "I will continue to push for necessary investments and help prevent any barriers to its economic growth, so it can continue supporting good paying jobs and helping Wisconsin businesses and farmers engage with new markets." This exemption underscores the significance of equitable trade policies and acknowledges the peculiar dynamics of the Great Lakes shipping.
Highlighting the economic advantages brought on by the exemption, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley credited the synergistic efforts that sealed the deal. He stated, “Milwaukee County is proud to stand alongside our partners to celebrate the recent exemption of costly port fees — a win that strengthens our local economy, supports family-sustaining jobs, and ensures Port Milwaukee can continue connecting our community to economic opportunity,” as mentioned on Congresswoman Gwen Moore website.
Stressing the unity, Mayor Johnson pointed out trade health and labor benefits linked to Port Milwaukee, "Our port supports manufacturers across the upper Midwest, and is a valuable transportation link for agricultural products grown in the region," said Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson on the Congresswoman Gwen Moore website. With a mission to promote sustainable growth and job creation, the port stands as a testament to the collective essence of the Great Lakes region's industrial vitality.
At the heart of the assembly, Port Milwaukee's Director Jackie Q. Carter outlined the port's objectives and future plans. “Port Milwaukee is open for business – Business is the reason that we exist," Carter informed, highlighting the port's commitment to mobilize goods through international markets by tapping into eco-friendly maritime shipping avenues.
