Ahead of the start of early voting, progressive New York City mayoral candidates Brad Lander and Zohran Mamdani announced mutual endorsements in a coordinated effort. The move is intended to strengthen their positions and unify support as they challenge front-runner Andrew Cuomo in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive race, Gothamist reports.
Queens Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani and current City Comptroller Brad Lander have utilized the ranked-choice voting system to establish a new coalition aimed at reshaping the trajectory of the mayoral race. As detailed by Gothamist, both candidates criticized Andrew Cuomo’s previous tenure during a recent debate, characterizing it as reflective of entrenched political corruption. Their alliance comes at a time of increased public scrutiny and amid growing calls from New Yorkers for political change. Early voting begins today and continues through June 23, leading up to the primary on June 24.
At the center of their joint effort, Mamdani and Lander emphasize a common goal of building an affordable New York. Mamdani reinforced this message, telling Gothamist, "I am proud to rank our principled and progressive Comptroller #2 on my ballot because we are both fighting for a city every New Yorker can afford." The pair is encouraging their supporters to rank the other candidate second, aiming to impact the ranked-choice voting process, where votes are redistributed if no candidate achieves an initial majority.
Despite the political maneuvering of Lander and Mamdani, the former governor’s campaign continues to gain traction; as noted by the New York Post, a recent poll by the Honan Strategy Group paints Cuomo as holding a commanding lead with 38% support compared to Mamdani's 22% and Lander's 12%, however, Lander's campaign got a significant boost from his endorsement by a panel of local experts featured in the New York Times opinion section.
This cross-endorsement represents a strategic approach seen in previous elections, where division among challengers contributed to the success of other candidates. Lander described his partnership with Mamdani as "the best way to beat Cuomo," according to the New York Post. The race’s developments—including the alliance between Lander and Mamdani and former Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s $5 million endorsement of Cuomo.
