Wake County Public Health officials have confirmed the case and are sounding the alarm for pet owners to remain vigilant and ensure their pets’ vaccinations are current.
The incident, which took place in the 27615 ZIP code area, prompted a response from Wake County Animal Control, the dog in question was current on its rabies vaccination, which may have prevented the situation from becoming direr it received a booster shot following the encounter, and the reports indicate that the animal is faring well post-incident. Nevertheless, Wake County is taking no chances and is reaching out to anyone who may have had an unlucky run-in with a raccoon in the vicinity.
The county urges those who may have been in contact with any raccoon to get on the line with Wake County Communicable Disease at 919-250-4462, and it’s not just a friendly suggestion; if there’s been any biting or scratching involved, seeking medical assistance is imperative—speed is of the essence when dealing with the threat of rabies.
Wake County Commissioner Tara Waters punctuated the seriousness of the incident and the need for proactive protection against rabies, "Rabies is a serious public health concern, and we're grateful that this pet was protected through vaccination," she highlighted in a recent statement, the situation serves as an undeniable prompt to keep pet vaccinations not just on the calendar, but on the immediate to-do list for all responsible pet guardians in the community.
