In a recent surge of Texan pride, Rockwall County has officially been named the Marriage Capital of Texas. The ten-year designation, confirmed through Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 6, is a nod to the county's deep-rooted tradition of matrimony and community celebration. According to an announcement by County Clerk Jennifer Fogg, the resolution was signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott.
"Rockwall has long been a place where love, family, and commitment are deeply valued," Senator Hall explained, per the Rockwall County's official site. There's an intention here to steadily continue to cultivate Rockwall's reputation as a beacon for those embarking on the journey of marriage. Representative Katrina Pierson has also voiced her enthusiasm, remarking on the county's 90-year history as a beloved locale for couples to unite in matrimony. The recognition is believed to further elevate tourism, showcasing Rockwall as a top destination for love and Lone Star State pride.
The resolution itself highlights the longstanding allure of Rockwall County as a sought-after wedding destination, noted since the early 20th century. Popularity peaked in the 1940s and 1950s when marriage licenses were uniquely issued around the clock due to a night watchman at the courthouse stepping in as deputy clerk. Furthermore, a local doctor provided late-night blood tests, which were then a prerequisite for marriage licensing.
Although the 24-hour license issuance has ceased since the 1950s, Rockwall County continues to attract prospective newlyweds with its marriage certificates, renowned for their uncommon beauty and elegance. "The county is further admired for its wide selection of wedding venues that suit a variety of tastes and styles," were the exact words used in the resolution, as quoted by Rockwall County's announcement.
