In a push to bolster housing affordability and offer critical support to the city's most vulnerable, Sacramento is doubling down on two significant developments. The Heights on Stockton, a new affordable housing community with 200 units, has opened its doors, while the city is also launching a groundbreaking hospice service for the homeless who are terminally ill. Mercy Housing California spearheaded the residential project, which repurposes an area previously dotted with closed-up commercial spaces.

According to a report by Sacramento City Express, Mayor Kevin McCarty commemorated the occasion, stating, "This is more than a ribbon-cutting. It’s a celebration of progress—of reclaiming a long-vacant, blighted lot and transforming it into a vibrant, inclusive place that dozens of Sacramento families will now call home." The project, which nestles in an eight-acre space at 5200 Prickly Pear Avenue, was substantially backed financially by the City and the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency (SHRA), collectively extending $15 million in loans.

The residential development marks a stride towards enhancing the local infrastructure. Mayor Pro Tem Eric Guerra, representative of the district, told Sacramento City Express, "I made a commitment 10 years ago to do something different along Stockton Boulevard as we move into the future. We’ve built a place that connects the residents to local transit, a walkable school, supports local businesses, but more importantly gives people the opportunity to have a real shot at making a better life for themselves in Sacramento."

The development touts a range of amenities from electric car charging stations to a community center with a full kitchen and outdoor play areas—the community center, surrounded by apartments, instead of the usual parking facilities dominating the landscape. Aiming to serve low-income families, The Heights on Stockton offers housing options varying from one to three-bedroom apartments, suitable for households earning 30% to 70% of Sacramento County's median income. Prospective tenants can apply through Mercy Housing's online portal and can expect to move in as units become available.
