The heat of the Texas summer brings many to the banks of the San Marcos River, but a new fee could change the landscape of who makes their way to this popular destination. Starting July 1, non-residents will need to pay for parking at City Park, with fees ranging from $5 an hour to $25 for special events and holidays, Fox 7 Austin reports.
San Marcos city officials are enacting these fees as an effort to cover the maintenance costs of the park, which sees a significant uptick in visitors during the warmer months. As the city explained, non-residents do not contribute to property taxes, a primary source of maintenance funding. Mark Jalufka, the general manager at Lions Club Tube Rental, supports the city's decision, stating in an interview obtained by Fox 7 Austin, "A very large percentage of the people that come here don't spend money here, like restaurants, grocery stores, hotels, things like that." He added, "The city, they want to put more money into the parks. And so, it's designed to, the pay parking is designed to infuse money into the park system."
However, not all share Jalufka's sentiment. "I feel like it's probably going to discourage people from out of town coming here," said Matt Hurt, a Houston resident, during a statement obtained by Fox 7 Austin. He elaborated on the financial strain, noting, "everything's so expensive these days. You got dinner, you got a lot of people who have families that they need to worry about. It's just an extra challenge to go through in order to be able to do this and have fun."
In line with the new rules, San Marcos residents must register their vehicles online for free parking. Up to five cars can be registered at any address, with proof of residency required during the process. The influx of visitors is significant; according to Chron.com, the city reported that about 70 percent of weekend riverfront park attendance is from non-residents, with the majority coming from major cities such as Houston and Austin.
This parking fee follows discussions earlier in the spring about a potential river access fee for non-residents, which has not been implemented but remains under consideration. Echoing concerns about the parking fee, Jayk Highsmith, a visitor from Cedar Creek, told Fox 7 Austin, "It would definitely mean I wouldn't be coming here as often, especially depending on the pricing of it." As summer rolls in, the cost of cooling off at the San Marcos River may now come with an additional price for out-of-town guests.
