ReJoyceful Animal Rescue, a local shelter in Clinton Township, Michigan, faces a crisis in the aftermath of recent severe storms that caused extensive flooding and damage. Suffering losses in the thousands, the shelter's pleas for assistance resonate across the community.

Wednesday's storms not only brought substantial rainfall but also resulted in a confirmed EF-0 tornado touchdown in the Fraser area, marked as the year's 29th for Michigan. While no injuries were reported, the animal shelter encountered significant challenges when the deluge backed up a storm drain and water inundated the facility up to ankle height. As detailed by ClickOnDetroit, volunteers scrambled to protect and move the animals to safety, though critical supplies were lost.

The staff's frantic efforts could not spare the food, treats, toys, and other resources from destruction. In addition to the flooding, a burst pipe compounded the damage inside the shelter. According to a FOX 2 Detroit report, the shelter's founder, Michelle Heyza, shared her fears, saying, "We're not going to survive this," reflecting on the potential undoing of years of her effort in a matter of minutes.

It was amid this chaos, having rescued a host of animals over the years, that ReJoyceful Animal Rescue found itself facing a bleak reality. The landlord's insurance will cover building repairs, but as for the contents, "The repairs to the building itself are covered by the landlord's insurance, but we are responsible for the contents," revealed the shelter in a statement obtained by CBS News Detroit. The shelter's own insurance policy denied their claim because it included an exemption for 'certain water conditions'—a clause that has proven to be a cruel twist of fate for the shelter and its inhabitants.

The shelter, which also stated that all the damaged food supplies were supposed to provide for the 300 animals in their care, is now turning to the community for help. A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to aid in their recovery efforts. Anyone able to contribute to the fundraiser or offer to foster animals is urged to do so, as the shelter struggles to sustain its mission of caring for and rehoming these vulnerable pets.
